The Decalogue myth

Christianity brought many things to the life of our ancestors. Witch hunts, restriction of freedom of speech and even thoughts, crusades or antisemitism. I, however, consider it’s greatest succes the fact that the christian leaders have persuaded us to believe that the Decalogue is the base of our civilization and that we are living in a civilized society thanks to it. This widespread statement is, however, totally wrong, as I will explain in this article.

The influence of the christian ideology is deeply rooted in our minds as a conclusion of centuries long brainwashing. I would even say that this myth has become part of our cultural heritage. Nevertheless, I believe it is time to slowly rebunk some of the lies the christian leaders have been telling us for centuries.

So, what is the Decalogue? Well, the Decalogue is supposed to be the list of rules given to the people by god in order to give them clear instructions how to live. Naturally, god didn’t give them anything. The Decalogue is an invention of a power-hungry religious leaders to control the people. This fact is pretty clear. But it still doesn’t answer the question, why our society hasn’t risen from these rules.

Let me ask you this. Had civilizations existing before the Decalogue been living in a total anarchy? Because if the Decalouge had trully been the base of our civilization, the civilizations existing before it’s creation would have to be living without any rules at all. And as you can imagine, they weren’t. They also had rules. And those rules, not surprisingly, didn’t allow people to kill each other, rebel against their leader or have sex with the wives of their neighbours.

Do you think that the rulers of the Ancient Egypt allowed their citizens to steal? Or despise their gods? No. Not to mention the Romans. They didn’t know or recognize the Decalogue for centuries of the Roman Empire existence. But they also didn’t live in anarchy. Actually, their law system was so perfect that almost every law system existing today contains elements of the roman law.

So what actually is the Decalogue? It’s the basic principle needed to be followed in order to make the society work. You can’t kill people just because you have a bad day, you can’t have sex with your neigbour’s wife just because you want to, you can’t steal from people just because you feel sudden urge to steal something and you definitely can’t disobey your leaders no matter what your motive is. And it doesn’t matter, if you consider god or king or elected government to be your leader.

The author of the Decalogue, whoever he was, definitely didn’t invent these rules. He just put them on paper (or stone tablets if we follow the legend). These rules, however, existed long before the Decalogue. They existed since the homo sapiens decided to live in a groups creating the first, primitive society.

And why is it so important to realise this fact? Because we live in the 21st century. Science can answer almost all the questions you can imagine and even if it can’t, it can still come up with more reasonable theory than religion. But religion, no matter which, somehow still hold its position and brainswash the people who are blind to the fact that religion is dead. We must wipe religious ideology out of the earth in order to create new civilization based on sense. And we can achieve that only by disproving the myths that helps the religious leaders and, consequently, religion to keep its position in today’s society.

If we allow religion to keep it’s position, we will live in a civilization stuck between the medieval and modern ideas. And this hybrid civilization won’t survive for long as it will soon be destroyed by the religious fanatics
